Sleepy Joe

Stop me if you've heard this one.

A dad walks into the two year old sunday school classroom at church and finds his son, laying face up, sprawled out asleep on the floor. This while the whole time the buzz of the other two year olds is around him and he's unfazed. The cracker he was eating is still in his hand; like he suddenly became narcoleptic and fell to the floor snoozing.

The dad can't believe his eyes and picks up his sleeping boy to go tell his mom what just happened.

They laugh about all week. About how strange it is that their child who's NEVER slept at church, even in the nursery as a baby when he should've been sleeping just fell asleep in the middle of his classroom. (The mom was also a little bitter at her husband for not explaining to the teacher of the sunday school class that they had been out of town, and the small trip must've thrown their little guy for a loop. The teacher needed to know that his parents are loving parents who have bedtimes and BEDS and sound machines and aren't raising a feral child who is prone to taking naps on dirty school floors like he's deprived or something).

So the week passes and the mom makes sure she's the one who drops her son off at class this time, so she can a) have a laugh with the teacher about the previous week AND b) give an explanation for why she's not a horrible mother. "He's NEVER done that before! HA HA!!" are the words echoing through the sunday school hallway as the mother leaves her son.

The parents enjoy a church service in peace, soaking up meaningful words and having personal spiritual epiphanies about everything from signing up for a life group bible study and why they need to either have a baby or a puppy. (j/K ;) They then walk upstairs to get their youngest child from his two year old classroom and are stopped by this sight:

Their blonde boy, propped up in an office chair, sleeping through the streams of parents coming through to pick up their not drowsy children from their classes, apparently unfazed by the giggling and pointing that is happening in his direction.

The mother and father are stunned and not really sure if they want to claim this child in the chair. But then, in spite of their shirking, they hear the sunday school director say, "Yo, Pops!" and direct them over to the child, where they sheepishly pick him up (after taking a picture of course).

The rest of the day they are dumbfounded by this behavior. They conclude that there probably are many factors to the recent narcolepsy. Trips, the new rigors of the "school schedule," growth spurt, and perhaps that their little blonde bundle is crying himself exhausted due to his recent separation issues. Either way, they vow then and there to only leave the house for important things like groceries and daily Starbucks runs and NOTHING else. Only the ESSENTIALS. The boy will get the sleep he's apparently lacking.

The couple also conclude that they're not really sure if they'd like to continue attending this church. They just can't take what next Sunday may hold for them.

THE END
